📐 How Ovulation Is Calculated

Ovulation Day Formula

Ovulation Day = LMP + (Cycle Length − Luteal Phase) Default (28-day cycle, 14-day luteal phase): Ovulation = LMP + (28 − 14) = LMP + Day 14 For a 32-day cycle (14-day luteal phase): Ovulation = LMP + (32 − 14) = LMP + Day 18 Key: The LUTEAL PHASE is fixed (~14 days in most women) The FOLLICULAR PHASE varies (cycle length − 14)

Fertile Window

Sperm survival: Up to 5 days in fertile cervical mucus Egg survival: 12–24 hours after ovulation Fertile Window = Ovulation Day − 5 to Ovulation Day + 1 (6-day window: 5 days before + ovulation day + 1 day after) Peak fertility days: 2 days BEFORE ovulation + ovulation day These 3 days give the highest chance of conception. Conception requires sex in this window for sperm to be present when the egg is released.

Follicular vs Luteal Phase

A menstrual cycle has two phases: Follicular Phase (variable): Day 1 (period) → Ovulation Duration: 10–21 days (varies by cycle length) FSH stimulates follicle growth Estrogen rises → LH surge → Ovulation Luteal Phase (relatively fixed): Ovulation → Next period Duration: 12–16 days (average 14) Progesterone rises (corpus luteum) If no fertilization → progesterone drops → period Short luteal phase (< 10 days) can cause infertility — worth discussing with a doctor.
